a busy first week…

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

another post for this blog… it’s only been three days from the previous one but lots of things did happen to me… mainly finished the first week of my long four years journey as an undergraduate business student…

so last thursday 12:00 p.m, i had business law class… it’s damn boring… the prof was like mumbling… blu bla bla… persis kaya reyner d… udha gitu we learned business law, which sadly are all about theories and laws… arrrgghhh… boring banget d… i really don’t enjoy mainly-theory-based subjects… i can assure that the rest of the class found this class not-so-enjoyable as well…

then… friday was a long day… 8:30 p.m i had communication: competencies and strategies class… the stupid thing was that i forgot to bring my wallet on my way to the bus stop, so I rushed back to the hostel to take it… luckily i made it to the class quite on time… just one or two minutes late… haha… since this was my very first class for this subject, i thought it would be a good idea to give a good impression by showing up on time… ummm… the class itself was fun… the prof is a young woman… age of early 30s I guess… or even late 20s… she is very good at teaching, i guess… anyway, the class is lively as it has to be being a communication class… hahaha… this one is gonna be an enjoyable one… hahaha…

then after the class ended… which was about 11:45 a.m, we had VIVACE…! VIVACE is an annual event held by SMU… this year VIVACE was held along the underground concourse, making the concourse a very crowded place… oya, VIVACE is basically the time for CCAs to set up booths and "advertise" themselves in various ways to SMU students, especially freshmen… I signed up for many CCAs… hahaha… kendo, aikido, taekwondo, frisbee, pool club, trus… tau lah banyak bgt… gw ampe lupa… hahaha… we basically signed up for many CCAs in order to get n fulfill stamps in our VIVACE card stamp slots, enabling it to be exchanged for a VIVACE goodie bag… hahaha… isinya mayan worth the effort sih… hehehe…

then after that we, international freshmen, went to administration building to hear about tuition grant presentation… this one was not so useful… haha… after that we head back to School of Economics n Sosial Sciences… SMUKI invited indo freshmen to have some kind of welcoming tea… hahaha… ternyata this event was held by Indonesian Student Christian Fellowship… so we had this little praise n worship session followed by sharing session… umm… felt something in this session d… since the fellowship wasn’t that big, gw jadi inget persekutuan doa that i once attended back in PH… miss those times n those feelings… trus after that gw ama edgar cabut makan bareng orientation group pas FTB kmaren di Miss Clarity cafe… it turned out that only me, edgar, alex, hui min, yang n his girlfriend were there… jadilah cuma kita berenam… but it was quite fun… haha… we shud do that again sometime later… hahaha… n then… oya, Fefe’s bday was today… happy birthdae fe…! wishing all the best for u…

26 aug… had international freshmen lunch together in li ka shing library… yg ngadain juga gereja… anglican church st.andrew’s cathedral deket city hall mrt… after the lunch itself we had this amazing race activity… this one was really an amazing race… dari SMU ke esplanade ke marina bay ke suntec ke boat quay trus finally ke st.andrew’s cathedral nya d… quite exhausting but fun thou… hahaha… sayangnya anak2 indo yg ikut cuma gw, lius, ama andy… after that the three of us balik bentar ke hostel… ngaso… trus cabut lagi ke eastcoast… SMUKI has this bbq night… this one is also fun… haha… trus udha d balik hostel… mandi… chat… reply emails from SMU colleagues about group projects… nulis blog…

capek deh minggu ini… udha gitu bangkrut gw beli textbooks yg klo di add up udha ampir S$ 150… aarrrrgghhhh… so unpleasing since this books will only be used for one term… i tried to seek for these books at VERTS bazaar and SMUKI Booksale bazaar… but all were sold out… huhh… yasudha terima saja… bought new ones deh… truss… after almost 3 weeks kenal anak2… i start to "read" each n every one of them… turns out that there is a couple of them yg "ngeselin"… hahaha… mirip2 lah ama sahabat gw di PH… hahaha… duh masa gw kesini ketemu ama species yg sejenis ama tuh bocah sih… hahaha… terima saja lah… a bit annoying sih… huhh… specially today… hahaha… udha lah… biarin aja…

4 course units… shud i bid one more…?

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

huff… bingung nieh gw… after some things happened n some others are yet to come… otak gw jadi kecampur2 gitu… banyak pikiran… jadi sering kelupaan some important events kaya VIVACE ntar tgl 25… duhh… maap2… saya lupa… trus juga what shud i do first n what can i do later on…

up till now i’ve been having 2 classes… the first one is Financial Accounting with Prof. Tan Teck Meng on last Monday… he was one funny prof… the class was so lively n i think this class has a good prospect… hahaha… this prof was really a clown joker… hahaha… n jayus juga… jadi inget pa Todung… pa kabar anda pak…? hahaha… teringat ajaran2 BM pa Todung nieh… the way this prof teaches is kinda similar to pa todung’s… open minded class discussions where sometimes we came to the point where we almost get off the hook… hehe… but i like this prof… nice to have his class preassigned to my schedule, cuz i heard a lot of seniors are dying to bid n get into this course… the prof really is a popular one… hahaha…

oya… one quick overview about enrolling into a course in SMU… we have the BOSS system… acronymed from Bidding Online SyStem… this is the one and the only way a student can be enrolled in a course (except from those preassigned courses)… so it basically works like bidding a course u want…! we were given this account n money, namely eDollars… we only can bid n pay with that currency during the given BOSS periods… as like any other real biddings, the bottom line rule is that the more money u dare to bid, the higher your chance to win the bidding is, but u still need to look for past statistics of the course u want to bid, in order to bid efficiently (not spending too much eDollars, in other words)… yet, freshmen are only given either e$20 or e$40 regarding to how many courses they are preassigned, and that amount of eDollars for now is kinda low… the worse thing is that eDollars are not transferrable (yet… cuz i heard the rumor that they will make it transferrable), nor that they were exchangeable with real dollars… the good thing with the whole BOSS is that it will simulate us to a real business situation… unlike NUS and NTU… their course enrollment method base on the online first-register-first-serve basis… so those NUS n NTU guys whose internet connection is slow, poor them… hahaha…

moving back to topic… ummm… this Wed i had Leadership and Team Building class with Prof. Ma Kheng Min… this class was… kinda so-so… we were divided into groups where we’ll get attached to throughout this term… the prof itself was not really contribute that much because she had Teaching Assistants (TA) with him to be the groups’ facilitators… my group’s TA is one smartass… he is now doing his fourth year n he is a double degree (business - econs) students… and guess what’s his GPA? A damn good 4.0… hahaha… kapan y gw bisa dapet GPA 4.0… hahaha… hopefully d… hahaha… amen…

so today gw nanya2 ama hendry… one of the senior from indo… i asked bout what course shud i bid… cuz rite now i was preassigned into 4 credit units, whereas i want to take 5… so i have to bid for one more course… he said that Quantitative Methods shud fit me… so now i looked up to the Quantitative Methods course overview… and after reading it, i thought this course was like a modelling course consists of decision analysis, forecasting, critical path analysis (damn i hate CPA… hahaha… i forgot that one already…)… and i really have no clue whether or not this class will add up to my schedule nicely and doesn’t make it too hard that it will be unachievable… shud i bid for this course…???

fuhh… tomorrow i hav 12:00 p.m Business Law class with Prof. Tham Chee Ho… duh… ngga tau dhe nih bsok class nya gimana… ppl said Business Law is one boring lesson sih… lots n lots of theories there… yah… basically that’s it… oiya… i got exempted from Calculus course… hahaha… finally me taking Math HL back in the IB was useful… hahaha… lagi banyak banget pikiran nieh… apply tertiary student Ez Link card… apply tuition grant… apply locker… beli ini itu… kirim ini itu… hahaha… banyak d… gw ampe bingung kadang what i shud do… hehehe…

today n tomorrow…

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

so… writing a post this time is indeed the best thing to do… fairly quiet n alone in the middle of the night… yea… i’m that kind of ppl who value quietness n calmness of a night… damai gitu rasanya… enak bgt d… ngebuat gw ngesampingin pikiran bosen gw… hehehe…

this morning i went to the cathedral of the good shepherd which is actually near SMU administration building… a typical cathedral kinda church… where we have old buildings n a Father who preach for so long… hehehe… but it was good anyhow… unbelivably there were lots of indonesians there… after the church ends, vito gw lius went back to the hostel… having brunch (breakfast n lunch) at "people’s park"… spent like an hour or so at the hostel before took off to Bugis… di Bugis bareng2 ama edgar, owen, amel, jennie, lius, ama kelvino… muter2 ampe jm 6an trus bru got back to hostel… baru malemnya, i chat with some ppl… sharing with manda, who tiba2 internetnya mati… ama diera, who is now confused for books for EE… trus juga with metha, whom i miss so much… ama yela, whose jayus jokes i always long to hear from… n that basically is just about today…

the important thing is actually not today… it’s tomorrow… i’m having my very first lecture tomorrow… financial accounting (ACCT 101 - G7) on monday 3.30 p.m up to 6.45 p.m… then i’ll be having a tuesday off… actually i’ll be off every tuesday… no class on tuesday was preassigned for me… wednesday 8.30 a.m to 11.45 a.m, i’ll be having leadership and team building (MGMT 001 - G9)… thursday 12 p.m to 3.15 p.m is business law (LGST 101 - G6)… n friday 8.30 a.m to 11.45 a.m, i’ll be having communication: competencies and strategies (COMM 101 - G7)…

huff… so basically tomorrow i’ll be starting classes… n tomorrow is an afternoon class… will it be good? i’m both excited n freakin out regarding to it… we’ll found out… hope everything will b good… i’m kinda sleepy, so i guess… i’ll go to sleep… zzzzzzzzz…

feeling hopeless and undone…

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

huff… it’s midnite already… jam di laptop gw udha 1.29… actually lg conference chat with diera and santi… tapi gw malah bengong… tau dhe… speechless hearing them sharing stories… current problems at PH… trus kebingungannya santi juga… gw jadi malah diem aj gt… inget masa2 dulu… when we used to share stories n each other’s problems… yea it’s indeed cliche… i’ve talked bout this like thousand times before… but it’s true… i’m a sensitive person… each n every times i feel this feeling, it gets more and more overwhelming…

idup di singapore emang ada enaknya ada nggaknya… gw akuin ituw… lo kmana2 enak ngga usah worry macet… apa2 deket n serba instant… tapi ya itu dia… apa2 mahal… duhduh… moreover my life was just like empty here… i’m physically here, but my mind goes somewhere else… it’s not that i don’t value the presence of my new friends here at singapore… i thank u guys so much for being here… but i just haven’t yet feel the same feeling i used to feel when i was with my friends… i know it just about time before i get used with living here, but can i stand through that time?

sekarang udha 1.43… dari tadi album ’space in between us’ nya ‘building 429′ gw ulang2 mulu… keinget seti ama fefe… seti was the one who bought this album n shared it to us… the songs are awesome… palagi ‘above it all’ ama ‘no one else knows’… thanks banget… these songs really supports me when i feel hopeless n undone…

‘Above It All’ - Building 429

oh i’m waiting for the answer to the question in my soul

Lord why did you lead me here?

i take a look around and a desperate world surrounds me

i know i’m not of this place, but its here and in my face

all that i am wants to run

God i feel hopeless and undone…

lift me up above it all

i’m feeling broken and alone

don’t let me turn to stone

lift my heart above it all

’cause i’ve lost my hope tonight

and i’m praying for the strength to carry on

Lord lift me up above it all

‘No One Else Knows’ - Building 429

my world is closing in

on the inside,

but i’m not showing it

when all i am is crying out

i hold it in and fake a smile

still i’m broken

i’m broken

only one can understand

and only one can hold the hand

of the broken…

of the broken…

when no one else knows how i feel

Your love to me is proven real

when no one else cares where i’ve been

You run to me with outstreched hands

and You hold me in Your arms

again

freshmen teambuilding camp…

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

Huff… It feels good to be back to civilization after the not-so-bad freshmen teambuilding orientation camp… I was about to write this post last night, but the wireless connection was amazingly slow…! Jadilah pagi ini gw ngeblog… So let’s just start off this post back from couple of days before the camp…

Ummm… so on the 12th aug we had this final 5th day of the workshop… which is quite good… it was a relief to finally accomplish it… eventhou we still have this final research essay to submit on the 18th… Straight after the workshop session, me n Manda went to City Harvest Church at Expo… near Changi… such a big church with about 20000 ppl in it… really enjoyed the service… awesome…! We had dinner at Bedok afterwards, together with some cellgroup ppl from the church… trusss… palagi y… oya, Reyner’s birthdae! Happy Birthdae Ner! Wish u all the best!

On the 13th aug basically did nothing particularly important… woke up late since i worked on the research essay till around 2… did it with some chatting thou… hahaha… cuma keluar buat makan n nyari long track pants buat camp nya… basically working on my essay the whole day roughly… ada sale buku murah2 banget gitu di expo… i initially wanted to go… but considering my essay plus how slack i was that day… i didn’t go.. n my choice was right… the book sold there were those infamous ones which i probably was not so interested in reading… hahaha… n then at 10 p.m me, my roomate n Edgar watched the community shield… Chelsea vs Liverpool… nice match… bravo Liverpool… hahaha… drowned back behind my laptop after the match… added some more paragraph to the essay n chat with ppl… decided to finish at about 2 a.m… then realized that i hadn’t pack up for the camp yet… hahaha… started packing… n then slept about 3…

14th of Aug… woke up at 6.45 felt so dizzy… it was damn early… n i didn’t have enough sleep… but i was quite excited n lazy at the same time for this was the first day of the camp… so we gathered at likashing library at 8… blended with our own groups… my group is L65 (Section L, group #65)… our group’s name given by the committee is ‘Hastiens’ whatever the meaning is… there were 12 freshmen initially in the group, but one guy would join at the last day of the camp… so we started 12 ppl altogether with our team facilitator. Our group was me, Edgar, Yang and Liu Chen (Chinese folks), and the rest are Singaporeans: Benny, Kenneth, Alex, Jevin, Denyse, Hui Min, Shi Jie… The one guy who came at the last day is Bernard. The facilitator’s name is Sara, also a Singaporean. They are nice… hahaha… a pleasure to know u guys…!

The very first time we reached the campsite i was quite surprised. I thought the campsite would be terrible… where we should sleep at tents and stuffs like that… but it wasn’t. In fact, it was quite nice… we slept in big groups altogether in bunks using our sleeping bags… hahaha… the very first activity we had was kayaking. And it wasn’t quite good to do kayaking for the first day since we would get tired afterwards, whereas this was just the start of the whole camp. The kayaking activity itself was that basically we were divided into 2 small teams A n B… both teams had to ride the kayaks… 2 ppl n each kayak… team A on the left and B on the right… The objective was to transfer ppl from team A to team B’s kayak and vice versa… The rule was that only one person can talk and give instructions once we were out at the sea. We did it quite nice with nobody fell down when they were moving to other kayaks. Only one kayak capcized as we tried to make our way back to the shore. It was so exhausting anyway…

After kayaking, we had the maze activity. We basically were put into a maze where half of our group was blindfolded and the other half was muted. We must make our way to the finish line of the maze throughout each and every station in the maze, and we must be physically directly connected to other ppl in the team. It was hell of a fun… hahaha… Our team went in as the second last team but gets out as the third team. Quite good i thought…

And then at the night we had this so-called ‘fright night’ activity. Compared with the LDK ones back in PH… this one was really nothing! Hahaha… we had this fright night in a house… they tried to make this house like a haunted one… a good effort thou… the girls are screaming… hahaha… the funny thing was that our group was divided into two… all guys and all gals group… the girls went in first and after 5 mins the guys went in… while the girls got all scared, the senior in charge of the activity was telling the guys group, "Hey guys, i know u won’t get scared over these things… so just come in and have a look to the seniors who made the girls screaming… don’t forget to say hi to them…" hahaha… so that’s why they split the girls from the guys… just so that their lame ghosts scared some ppl at least…! hahaha…

15th of Aug… second day of the camp… woke up so early at 5.35 to attend the Feast of the Assumption of Mary at a catholic church near the campsite… me, Edgar, and Denyse went to the church… it’s one of the few cozy catholic church in the world… hehehe… got back to the campsite at about 8… we then had this activity of constructing plus decorating a simple cart, making two cheers and one skit for section L… Lunch… Afterwards, we did some more group activities on the beach where we all -once again- got wet…! Then, we still had a couple more activities to do before finally having dinner… Awfully, we used the remaining free time of dinner to finish up the cart so that we were quite possibly one of the only few group in the camp that had not taken bath yet… Quite gross… Yet we still enjoyed the campfire night we had at the end of the night… sang songs together… danced together… it was damn fun!

16th of Aug… woke up full of spirit for this was the last day of the camp… had breakfast at 6.30 n did some stretching together with the team. There was only one activity left for this last day: The Amazing Cart Race. Basically we had one person from the group to ride the cart and the others should all be physically connected. The activity itself consisted of 7 stations, of which we were all got wet, soapy, dirty (yes, get dirty at the next station after we’re get soapy… hahaha…), and salty by the sea water… hehehe… basically all required a good teamwork to succeed. After that last activity, we bathed, cleaned up the places, took some pictures and headed back to SMU…

That’s basically how these past days went… some things to be noted about the camp: Unlike other orientations, this one was parted into 3 runs with approximately 450 freshmen at each run. It actually was quite similar to LDK… but this one was an ideal blend of fun n serious stuffs with a much better venue. The activities seem to be not so physically demanding, but in the end we were still exhausted. Oya, the place itself was near Changi, so almost every 5 mins a plane passed us by… jadi kangen indo… hahaha… pengen pulang jadinya… pengen ikut nyantol aj gitu ke salah satu pesawat… hahaha… trus jadi keinget several farewells with ppl di airport… jadi keinget masa2 di PH… jadi kangen ama smuanya tentang PH… take me back to those times please…

a stupid workshop based on a stupid SAT…

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

Sore ini… baru balik dari SMU… the 3rd day of the workshop… it was boring as usual… It’s not about grammar and tenses and stuffs… it’s about how to write an academic style of paper… well i do learn new things yet it just boring…

The stupid thing about this whole workshop is that we join it with regard to our SAT Writing component score (which unfortunately, mine is just 10pts below 600, the required standard), whereas the materials teached here contradicts those we learned for the SAT. On the very first day of the workshop, our teacher Mr Clinton said something like, "I know u guys have studied bloody hard for the SAT and it was a pain in the butt, but now u should forget everything about the SAT, including its vocabulary and its style of essay writing."

And we’re like, "WHY?"

Then he said, "Well… u might not want to write a research paper using those superb SAT vocabulary and submit it to your professor, and the next thing u know is that u get a D because your professor has to open a dictionary and look up for the meaning of your fabulous vocabularies on every sentence he read. For your information, that kind of paper is just sucks."

And then we’re like, "Man… why don’t u just go to the office of admission and tell them to get rid of SAT as one of the admission requirement?"

He answered, "Well i have… and they ask me whether or not i have a better replacement for that… and in fact i don’t… plus, i will not just easily say to them ‘u know… SAT is sucks and useless…! why don’t we just get rid of it…!’ and after all, i still need my job here…"

U see… this is just another proof of how unimportant SAT truly is… just as i always said, SAT is a way for those bastards to gain more money and in the same moment put workload on us students…

Huff… puas tuh tertumpahkan unek2 gw… hehehe… so hari ini workshop day 3… butek banget hari ini… feels like i ‘woke up on the wrong side of the bed’… yg lebih mengejutkan lagi pas gw balik hostel tnyata udha ada roommate gw… orang vietnam… dokter gitu lagi pursue postgraduate degree di singapore general hospital… orangnya biasa2 aj sih ngga neko2 kayanya… iyalah orang dokter udha umur 20an gitu… well… jadi males nih udha ngga sendirian lagi sekamar… pengen cepet2 pindah apartment mana gitu kek… kan enak… hehehe…

gw bosen banget nieh… baru 9 days padahal… gimana gw ntar 4 taon y… belom lagi 3 taon working contract disini… hahaha… tau lah… i miss everything about ph… kangen anak2… mana ada yang susah dicontact lagi… hhhhhh…
